David Perecman Fights for Worksite Safety

David Perecman, leading attorney for the personal injury accident group The Perecman Firm PLLC, is on the forefront fighting for construction worksite safety. He is pleading for engineers to review their construction site safety plans and complete their construction inspections for maximum safety. This comes after several years of worksite accidents at the former Deutsche Bank tower, with the latest being when a construction worker fractured his leg in an accident in the basement.
New York City's Buildings Department cited the contractor for not providing enough shoring or netting for fall protection.
The tower's sloppy deconstruction is a tragic reminder of the importance of construction safety inspections and regulations. When governments and contractors don't hew to these rules, people get hurt, said David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, PLLC.
According to Newsday.com, "New York City's Buildings Department cited the contractor for not providing enough shoring or netting for fall protection." This same building is where two firefighters lost their lives in a blaze in 2007. Since then, John Galt Corp. and three construction officials have been charged with manslaughter for that incident.

Foe of 10 Commandments judge loses license

| A key figure in the case that ousted Alabama's Ten Commandments judge has had his law license suspended over a complaint filed by a client. Stephen Glassroth's license was suspended by the Alabama Bar Association after he did not respond to a complaint that he failed to represent lawyer Dana Jill Simpson, who had hired him to defend her in a tax case. Glassroth drew the ire of many in Alabama when he filed a lawsuit in 2001 to force Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore to remove his Ten Commandments monument from the state Judicial Building. Moore ignored a court order to remove the monument, and Glassroth succeeded in getting him expelled from office in 2003. Simpson, who has said she worked on Moore's judicial campaign, did not return messages from The Associated Press seeking comment. Glassroth did not return a call to his Georgia home seeking comment. Simpson made the news in the summer of 2007 when she testified before the House Judiciary Committee, claiming that GOP operatives pushed for the prosecution of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, a Democrat. Simpson told the committee she learned of the effort when she worked on the 2002 campaign of Alabama's current Republican governor, Bob Riley, who beat Siegelman in his bid for re-election that year. Siegelman was convicted of federal charges of taking a bribe from former HealthSouth Corp. CEO Richard Scrushy in exchange for a seat on a state medical regulatory board. Siegelman's appeal of the conviction is scheduled to be heard Tuesday in Atlanta. |

Federal officials refused to treat a diabetic immigration detainee'sgangrenous wound for more than two months, despite a stench so bad thatother prisoners staged a hunger strike to demand care for him, MartinHernandez Banderas claims in Federal Court. He says that when theagonizing infection became so serious that a doctor recommendedamputation, the USA discharged him from prison so it wouldn't have topay for it.
Hernandez Banderas was imprisoned at theImmigration and Customs Enforcement prison in San Diego. Among theclaims in his federal complaint are that 83 detainees have died incustody of the immigration service in the past 5 years, many of themfrom inadequate medical care.
Hernandez says his treatment wasso bad it constituted torture. He demands punitive damages. He isrepresented by Carol Doyle with Willoughby Doyle of Oakland. |

American College of Trial Lawyers Chooses Lukey

King Yaklin Wins $1M in Attorney's Fee's

A Superior Court judge has ordered a couple and their attorney suingBishop Earl Paulk to pay more than $1 million in legal fees and courtcosts from a dismissed case.
Mona and Bobby Brewer sued Paulk and his church, then known as ChapelHill Harvester Church in Decatur, asserting sexual misconduct. MonaBrewer claimed in the suit she had a 14-year coercive affair with Paulk.
The Brewers dropped their years-old suit last July, but each filed a separate suit in state court later in the year.
The judge entered the order last Friday for costs incurred by threedifferent legal firms who defended Paulk in the Superior Court case.
Matthew Wilkins of King & Yaklin, one of Paulk's firms, said they are still reviewing the order and had no comment.
Louis Levenson of Levenson & Associates, the Brewer's attorney,said he has not seen the order. Levenson and the Brewers were orderedto pay the fees.
Paulk was one of Atlanta's preeminent preachers in the 1980s and 1990s.He had a church of 10,000 and an international ministry and TV program.A series of allegations of sexual misconduct plagued his work, and Paullost influence and his ministry.
He still goes to the church, now called the Cathedral at Chapel Hill,but has dropped from public sight. Attendance on the mammoth campus hasdropped dramatically. |

The Pacifica City Council appointed Josh Gordon and Celeste Langille to the Pacifica Planning Commission Feb. 11. Josh Gordon is an attorney with the San Francisco firm Morrison and Forester. He worked for a federal judge in San Francisco for one year and spent eight years with a top tier law firm in Palo Alto. He spent eight years working with autistic children in Santa Cruz. Gordon is a member of the American Bar Association, Doctors Without Borders, Southern Poverty Law Center and the San Mateo County Bar Association. On his application for the Planning Commission he wrote he wishes "to directly participate in the decisions affecting my community." "I bring to the table an ability to rigorously analyze all sides of an issue, which is a product of my legal training and experience as a lawyer," he wrote. Langille is an attorney who has represented environmental and community groups and has experience working with public agencies and officials. She is well versed in land-use laws, including CEQA, and real estate law. She has experience in document review and analysis. She is a member of the California Bar Association and the Sierra Club. |
